Lunch Money is a game that we came up with to help address and teach kids about ongoing issues that are going on around them. While trying to become a learning experience we wanted the kids to enjoy what they were playing. Our intent for this game is teach kids about poverty and how others might not be as well off as some. We came up with a way to help make this affordable to school systems and other learning institutions if they wanted to use this.
The intent of LUNCH MONEY is to educate children about the life of kids who are in poor financial conditions, and of the decisions these children have to make. The game aims to be engaging while guiding its players to think about life from this new perspective. Players should come to understand that sometimes a lack of access to basic necessities severely reduces your ability to get an education.
Above is one of the levels that was completed. As shown you can see the level has a timer in which you have to collect the levels given collectibles. The longer it takes for you to complete a level the lower your grade is at the end of the day.
As shown above this shows the kids performance deteriorate slowly over the course of a week. Each day, the player’s hunger meter goes down by one. This leads to some negative effects for the player, such as decreased movement speed. Specifically, the player will move 5 units per second on Monday, 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 3 on Thursday and Friday.
